Winnie
Kiiru, Wildlife Consultant
For the last 15 years, Winnie has distinguished her self in her profession as a scholar, researcher, and practitioner. She was previously, The Regional East Africa Representative for The Born Free Foundation, a UK based wildlife Charity which she is still closely involved. Prior to that, she worked as a senior researcher with Kenya Wildlife Service, the government agency responsible for wildlife in Kenya.
Winnie has traveled widely around the world, gaining international exposure on issues such as the global wildlife trade, the captive animal industry (zoos, circuses and safari parks) as well as environmental policies and practices around the world. She has made presentations on wildlife conservation to many audiences around the world, including a full house at the prestigious Royal Geographical Society in London, in March 2006 and 2007. As a member of the Species Survival Network (SSN), Winnie continues to play an active role in lobbying for the precautionary principle to guide decisions made at the Conference of Parties for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In Kenya, Winnie was appointed by the Minister for Tourism and Wildlife to a 12 member committee, mandated to review Kenya’s wildlife policy and Legislation.
Before pursuing her Phd in Biodiversity Management at the University of Kent in Canterbury, (UK), Winnie completed her MSc in Tropical resource Ecology from the University of Zimbabwe. She earned her BSc degree in Science at Kenyatta University in Kenya.
