Itinerary |
Day 1
Nairobi |
On arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International airport, Kenya’s gateway to the wild, you are met by your host, The Old Line Safari Company team who will transfer you to the elegant Nairobi Serena hotel. Your quiet room is a welcome retreat after the long flight. For the rest of the day, you may relax and catch up with the time zone or opt to get acquainted with the busy city of Nairobi in the company of the Old Line Safari team. You’ll visit the David Sheldrick Trust (to see the orphaned baby elephants; 1030hrs-1200 hrs). Lunch precedes your visit to Karen Blixen Museum at no extra charge. Later in the evening, we meet our safari director for a detailed safari briefing. Overnight Nairobi Serena hotel (D) |
Days 2 and 3: Maasai Mara Game Reserve |
After a sumptuous breakfast, transfer to the Wilson airport for your 10:00 A.M. flight to the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve. This is where you can see elephant, buffalo, lion, cheetah, leopard, zebra, giraffe, hippo, crocodile and a whole ark-full of other animals. For 45 minutes, wing your way west over the dramatic Great Rift Valley and enjoy a stunning view of the undulating plains of the Mara from the comfort of your aircraft seat. You'll spend two nights at Mara Serena Safari lodge, with the night sounds of the game and the fresh scent of the earth, grass, and bush around you. The ritual becomes addictive: early morning game drives to watch the waking plains, then back to the camp for lunch followed by a siesta or some time off to update your journal (B, L, D) |
| Day 4: Naivasha |
At the crack of dawn, you may take to the skies, if you choose, in a hot air balloon for a spectacular "hawk's eye view" of the game-studded plains, providing a memorable experience of the fabled Mara. After breakfast, you drive to the serene Malu, a private reserve nestled in an ancient Cedar forest with sweeping views over the Great Rift Valley. At Malu, many out door adventures awaits us; we can choose to engage in casual, informative, walk with resident naturalists, cycling and horse riding. Dinner and overnight at the exclusive Malu (B, L, D) |
Day 5 Lake Nakuru National Park |
We wake up to a sumptuous breakfast before leaving for a two-hour drive that gets us to Lake Nakuru where we have the chance to see the greatest bird spectacle in the world. A million or so flamingoes, beside pelicans and cormorants make Lake Nakuru a bird lover's paradise. A game drive through the various habitats of the park will certainly reveal why the park earned its status as a RAMSAR site as well as one of the best performing Rhino sanctuaries in Africa. Picnic lunch at the baboon cliff with a panoramic view of the lake. Overnight Malu (B, L, D) |
Day 6
Naivasha |
Morning at leisure. In the afternoon we could opt for a boat ride in the nearby Lake Naivasha. The only fresh water Rift Valley lake in Kenya, we undertake a memorable hippo cruise spiced with bird watching opportunities. Dinner and overnight in Malu (B, L, D) |
Days 7 and 8: Amboseli National Park |
We start our day with a hearty breakfast. At 0700hrs, grab our lunch boxes and drive to the world’s renowned Amboseli National Park, nestled on the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro on the southern border of Kenya and Tanzania. For the next two days, we’ll have an in-depth exploration of the Amboseli in the company of our driver guide and Winnie who will delightfully share with us her elephant conservation and community work in the Amboseli. During our morning and evening game drives expect to see huge herds of elephants wallowing in the swamp, giraffes, buffaloes, lions among others against the spectacular backdrop of the snow capped roof of Africa; Mt. Kilimanjaro. We enjoy an excellent cuisine and overnight at the Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (B, L, D) |
Day 9
Tsavo East National park |
Today after breakfast (0800hrs), we say kwaheri (farewell) to Winnie and the Amboseli and drive to Tsavo East National Park with enroute lunch. In 1989, Tsavo was notorious for the man eating lions but today it is famous for the numerous prides of maneless lions and the dust red elephants that patrol the plains. We spend two days delving into this pristine wilderness in search of the beasts and a wide variety of brightly coloured birds against a scenic backdrop of the shapely Taita hills and the Nyika plateau. All meals at the Voi Wildlife lodge with a panoramic view of the lodge’s waterhole where the beasts gather for a refreshing drink. Overnight Voi Wildlife lodge (B, L, D) |
Day 10
Tsavo East National park |
Our last full day in Tsavo is a real highlight, we may opt for game drives for further exploration of the expansive Tsavo or relaxing nature walks around the camp. Later in the day at 1700hrs, we visit our adopted baby elephants at the Sheldrick orphanage, proving a memorable opportunity to interact with Imenti, Tsavo, Makena among others as they prepare to go back to the wild. (Please note that this visit is only open to foster parents. To become a foster parent, kindly visit www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/asp/fostering.asp) Return to Voi Wildlife lodge for overnight stay. (B, L, D) |
| Days 11 and 12: Diani, South Coast |
Capping off more than a week of breath-taking safari, you embark on a two-hour drive to the coastal town of Mombasa, and onto the South Coast via a ferry crossing at Likoni and check into the Indian Ocean Beach club. You may swim in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, bask on the white sandy beach, jet ski, scuba dive, windsurf, and cruise to the reef in a glass-bottom boat for a fascinating glimpse of the coral gardens and other marine life. Another popular attraction is Fort Jesus, a 400-year-old fortress built by the Portuguese before the First World War as a stronghold to the entrance of Mombasa Harbor. The ancient fort constitutes a stunning example of sixteenth-century military architecture that has survived centuries of attack and conquest. Gazetted as a national museum, today the fort clearly represents ancient Arab and Swahili culture (B, D) |
| Day 13: Nairobi |
Greet your last day in Mombasa with a hearty breakfast followed by any last minute shopping or beach combing. Afternoon transfer to Mombasa airport for your flight to Nairobi where you may spend the afternoon shopping at Utamaduni Crafts Centre, followed by a farewell dinner. Then, it's time to transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to catch your departing international flight (B, D) |
