SAFARIS EXTENSIONS

Mombasa, the Kenya Coast Safari Extension

A delightful contrast to the grasslands and game-viewing of the interior, Mombasa, the Kenya Coast Safari Extension offers the opportunity to unwind on the tropical coast, where tranquil beaches, ocean breezes, and a distinctly Arabian point of view make for a perfect ending to a perfect vacation.

Itinerary

Days 1, 2, and 3
Mombasa

You fly from Nairobi to Moi International Airport in the coastal town of Mombasa, where your room at the Voyager Beach Resort or the Indian Ocean Beach Club awaits you. For the rest of the day, you may lounge on the white sandy beach and swim in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The next day finds you at the beach again; jet skiing, scuba diving, windsurfing, or cruising to the reef in a glass-bottom boat for a fascinating glimpse of the coral gardens and other marine life. Another popular attraction is Fort Jesus, a 400-year-old fortress built by the Portuguese before the First World War as a stronghold to the entrance of Mombasa Harbor. The ancient fort constitutes a stunning example of sixteenth-century military architecture that has survived centuries of attack and conquest. Gazetted as a national museum, today the fort clearly represents ancient Arab and Swahili culture.

At 7:00 A.M. on your last full day on the coast, a uniformed Old Line Safari Company representative picks you up at your hotel. A one-and-one-half-hour drive south via the ferry crossing at Likoni takes you to Shimoni for a dhow excursion to Wasini Island and Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park, famed for its brightly colored coral, starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and dolphins among other sealife. A Swahili-style buffet lunch and an afternoon boardwalk are ideal for unraveling the mysteries behind the island. The day ends with a visit to the ancient Shimoni caves, dimly-lit underground dungeons that once served as stores for slaves en route to the Arab world.

Day 4
Nairobi

After a leisurely morning and lunch, you must catch your one-hour flight to Nairobi. You may spend the afternoon exploring the city and shopping at the Utamaduni Craft Centre before a farewell dinner; then, it's time to transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departing international flight.
