BEADS AND BASKETS COMPANY
History
The Akamba and Taita communities in Kenya have long been famed for their skill and artistry in weaving baskets from sisal and other native plants and grasses. Ironically, these women still hail from some of the remotest and depressed regions in Kenya occasionally relying on relief food rations to survive. Over the past two years, we have mobilized over 200 women from these two communities to put this age-old craftsmanship to good use. Through interaction with tourists from all over the world, our company provides market access for the baskets, generating significant income for the disadvantaged communities.

About the Baskets
The baskets are individually hand-woven by the women and marketed in informal cooperatives. The raw materials used are locally grown or harvested from the wild including sisal, palm leaves, tree barks and banana fibres. Each basket is unique, varying slightly in design and colour. They have many uses including storage or simply room decorations. The unique qualities of sisal such as its strength and durability make it an important plant in rural households in East Africa. The dried sisal strands are tightly coiled then rolled back-and-forth against the weaver's leg until the perfect weaving strand is created. Each fibre is hand-dyed using natural ingredients and woven in different shapes and designs to produce beautiful and functional artworks.
